While the most well-known wine estates are in Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, the Helderberg area has some historic and undiscovered gems for the wine aficionado.
Vergelegen, for example, is one of the oldest and most prestigious wine farms in South Africa. Their award-winning wines, impressive grounds and historical buildings all make up part of a 300 year heritage. Sip your wine under ancient Camphor trees and breathe in hundreds of years of Cape culture.
Literally next door you will find another treasure, Morgenster. Morgenster is better known for their delicious and award-winning olive oils – but they have some amazing wines as well. Before you indulge in their flagship Bordeaux blend, why not try an informative olive oil tasting? You may just be pleasantly surprised by what you didn’t know about olives.
If you are looking for something a bit more boutique, the Ken Forrester estate is just down the road from Strand Beach Lodge – only 10 minutes’ drive up the R44. Ken Forrester is a family-run wine farm and is well known for their FMC (Forrester Meinert Chenin). If you are lucky, you might even get to meet ‘Mr. Chenin’ – Ken Forrester – himself.
So, whether you enjoy white, red, or just the atmosphere of wine tasting, Helderberg wine farms will not disappoint. And afterwards, of course, you can relax in comfort while your private driver ferries you back safely to your luxury seaside villa at Strand Beach Lodge.
